Fire Death Soldiers Named

Two British soldiers who died in a domestic fire at a base in Helmand have been named.

On Monday, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) released a statement which said the men, based at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan, were not thought to have died as a result of enemy action.

The MoD have released the names of Pte Robert Wood and Pte Dean Hutchinson, both of The Royal Logistic Corps.

Their next of kin have been informed.

Wing Cdr Martin Tinworth said: "Our heartfelt condolences go out to both soldiers' family and friends.

"Both soldiers were involved in vital support work for the UK forces who continue to bring hope and stability across Afghanistan."

The MoD said: "The incident is under investigation and more information will be released when known."

Since 2001, here have been 356 British deaths on operations in Afghanistan.

MoD names soldiers killed in Afghanistan
The Ministry of Defence has named two soldiers killed in Afghanistan at the weekend. Lance Bombardier Ross Clark and Lance Bombardier Liam McLoughlin, both from 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery, died during a rocket attack in the Sangin area of Helmand province on Saturday.

Paras Shot In Afghanistan Named
The Ministry of Defence have named two British soldiers killed on patrol in southern Afghanistan. On Wednesday, Pte Lewis Hendry, of 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment, and Pte Conrad Lewis, of 4th Battalion The Parachute Regiment, died in small arms fire. Both soldiers had been patrolling in the north of Nad-e Ali district in Helmand.

Whitehall War Office To Be Sold
A Ministry of Defence War Office building in Whitehall is to be sold to support "Defence priorities," it has been announced. The Old War Office was built in 1902 for the Imperial General Staff and was a focal point throughout the major conflicts of the 20th century. It housed numerous secretaries of state, including Winston Churchill.

War hero subject of second MoD probe
It has emerged today that Colonel Tim Collins, the British Army commander who won international plaudits for his moving pre-battle speech in Iraq, is the subject of a second MoD probe. The second inquiry surrounds the apparent suicide of an 18-year-old private soldier at Drumaad barracks, Co Armagh in Northern Ireland, two years ago.
