Sweden PM's Criticism Could Damage Assange Trial

A UK extradition hearing has been told that criticism of Julian Assange by Sweden's Prime Minister could affect his chance of a fair trial.

Geoffrey Robertson QC, who represents the Wikileaks founder, said Fredrik Reinfeldt's comments expressed "complete contempt for the presumption of innocence".

However the Swedish authorities' lawyer denied this would affect Mr Assange's trial.

Sweden currently wants to extradite him over sexual assault claims.

In December, after spending nine days in Wandsworth prison, Mr Assange was released on bail by a High Court judge.

Mr Assange, denies the alleged assaults on two women and said the investigation is politically motivated.

Earlier this week, Mr Robertson highlighted his concerns due to extensive press coverage leading to a "trial by media".
