Guilty Verdict In Godwin Lawson Murder

A man has been found guilty of murdering a promising young footballer in east London.

Godwin Lawson, 17, from Enfield, north London, was stabbed to death as he tried to help his friends in Stamford Hill.

The Oxford United Football & Education Academy student died at the scene in the March 2010 attack.

Moise Avorgah, 20, of Tottenham, north London, was cleared of two counts of attempted murder.

The Old Bailey heard how Mr Lawson went to attend to his friends, brothers Daniel and Julian Borja, when they were set upon by Avorgah.

Avorgah was not charged with the attempted murders of the brothers but was found guilty of wounding with intent.

Daniel Riley, 22, of, Holloway, north London, Matthew Lanihun, 21, of Finsbury Park, north London, and Koffi Osimeh, 20, also of Finsbury Park were cleared of the attempted murders of the Borja brothers. The jury could not decide on the alternative wounding with intent charges.

Man Jailed For Attempted Murder Of Pc
A south London man has been jailed for 25 years for tying to shoot a policeman. Michael Mitchell, 32, of Babington Road, Streatham, was convicted of attempting to murder Pc Shaun Callow, possession of a firearm and possession of drugs with intent to supply.

Body Recovered From Hampstead Ponds
Police divers have recovered a body from a pond in a north London park. Police were called to Hampstead Ponds on Hampstead Heath at 17:30 on Wednesday, following reports that a teenager had gotten into difficulty in the water. The Marine Policing Unit used three boats to search the pond, recovering a body just before 23:00.

Arrests Follow Edmonton Murder
Police investigating the murder of 15-year old Negus McLean in Edmonton have today made a further two arrests. A 14-year old boy, and a 16-year old boy, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody. Police were called at 7.25pm on Sunday 10 April to reports of a stabbing in Westminster Road, north London.

S Club Star Stevens Robbed
Popstar Rachel Stevens has been left "shaken" after a door-step ambush by three men demanding her jewellery. The robbers followed the Strictly Come Dancing runner-up to her Regents Park home, in north London, yesterday afternoon. They are believed to have made off with her engagement ring, a necklace and a watch.

Third man arrested in constable killing case
Police investigating the murder of special constable Nisha Patel-Nasri have arrested a third man in connection with their inquiries. A 35-year-old east London man has been taken into custody for questioing. Two men were arrested in connection with the murder of Mrs Patel-Nasri earlier this week.
