No Jail For Gascoigne

Football star Paul Gascoigne has avoided a jail sentence after being arrested for drink driving.

The former World Cup player, 43, was given an eight week jail term, suspended for a year.

He was sentenced at Newcastle Magistrates' Court, for driving over four times the legal alcohol limit.

Police Officers witnessed him driving erratically in the Jesmond area of Newcastle on October 8. He was later found to have 142mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

Gascoigne was due to be sentenced last month, but failed to appear as he had checked himself into rehab.

District Judge Stephen Earl heard how the troubled former England midfielder attends Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings while residing at the Providence Project, a rehabilitation centre in Bournemouth.

At a hearing in October, Gascoigne admitted drink-driving and was warned by Judge Earl that he could face 12 weeks in jail.

Next week, a separate drink-drive charge, which Gascoigne denies, will be heard at Northerallerton Magistrates' Court.

Gascoigne is now banned from driving for three years and was given an alcohol treatment order.
