England Miss Out On 2018 World Cup Bid

England has lost out on the chance to host the 2018 World Cup after Fifa, football's governing body, selected Russia to stage the event for the first time.

Russia fought off rival bids from Spain-Portugal, Netherlands-Belgium and England to clinch the secret ballot made up of Fifa's 22 executive members in Zurich.

Fifa In England For 2018 Bid
The Fifa delegation arrived in England today as the country continues the campaign to host the 2018 World Cup. The FIFA Inspection Team are to meet Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg in Downing Street before touring Wembley Stadium with England manager Fabio Capello.

Government to support 2018 World Cup bid
The government would support a bid by England to host the World Cup in 2018, it has been revealed. A report published by the Treasury states that England is well placed to stage the competition. Chancellor Gordon Brown, Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell and Sports Minister Richard Caborn toured the new Wembley Stadium on Monday.

Virgin Atlantic has been offered the rights to operate Heathrow links to Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Sir Richard Branson's airline bid successfully for the London landing slots formerly operated by BMI. The slots were released to others by regulators as a condition of allowing the takeover earlier this year of BMI by British Airways' owner IAG.
