It's 'Snow Joke' For Travellers

Freezing temperatures are continuing to cause major problems across parts of the UK as airports, roads and rail continue to be badly hit by snow.

Gatwick Airport has extended its closure until at least 0600 GMT on Friday.

After further heavy snowfall, many roads across the UK remain gridlocked.

While Southeastern rail service is running on their emergency timetable, Southern trains have suspended all of its services.

Around 6,500 schools across the UK are now closed.

Scotland has been issued with severe snow warnings in Grampian, Strathclyde, Central, Tayside and Fife, and South West, Lothian and Borders.

Meanwhile England has been issued with heavy snow warnings for the North East, Yorkshire and Humber, East, London and the South East, and the South West.

The Met Office are reporting temperatures as low as -25C (-13F) in Grampian overnight tonight.

Gatwick airport is experiencing 25cm in some places - 15cm of this falling overnight.

A Gatwick spokesman said: "We are doing everything we can to resume operations. However, conditions have deteriorated considerably. Our teams are working around the clock to make the runway safe for aircraft to use and get our airlines and passengers flying again."

A review of how transport operators are coping with the weather conditions is under way.
