Cardiff Battles Hepatitis Outbreak

Two pupils at primary school in Cardiff have suffered Hepatitis A, Public Health Wales has said.

According to the BBC this morning, more than 300 children and staff at at Meadowlane Primary School in St Mellons have now been screened for the infection.

Those in close contact with the two pupils in the school and their families have been offered a vaccination.

However, the offical health body, Public Health Wales said Hepatitis A had very unpleasant symptoms but was rarely serious and that screening was carried out by staff from Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, supported by Public Health Wales.

"The school has been extremely supportive and we continue to work closely with Cardiff council Environmental Health Officers to investigate the cases and to offer advice to parents, school staff and pupils," said a statement.

"There is no wider risk outside the school community.

"Hepatitis A is usually a short term infection that has very unpleasant symptoms but is rarely serious.

"Symptoms include flu-like symptoms like tiredness, general aches and pains, headaches and fever, as well as loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pains, jaundice, very dark urine and itchy skin.

"People are advised to contact their own GP if they have any concerns about their health or their child's health.

"No new cases have been identified but we continue to monitor the situation," the statement concluded.
