New Doctors 'Not To Work Beyond Training', Says BMA
The Co-Chair of the British Medical Association's Junior Doctors Committee has spoken out regarding Professor John Collins’ evaluation of the first two years of junior doctor training on The Foundation Programme.
Dr Tom Dolphin, Co-Chair of BMA Junior Doctors Committee said: "Instead of being an exciting launch pad for their careers, many junior doctors are finding that the first two years of training are characterised by inadequate levels of supervision. Our medical education system produces highly skilled graduates, but they must be properly supported once they begin direct patient care.
"We need to address the system failures that allow newly qualified doctors to be put in a position where they are working beyond their level of training. It is incredibly stressful for doctors to be put in this position and it will inevitably threaten patient safety.
"Where this is happening, employers need to be accountable for the systems in place to support juniors in clinical decision-making, and this must include juniors being withdrawn from a department if those systems are inadequate.
"We also need to urgently investigate problems with the selection of doctors into the programme, the length of work placements and the excessive levels of assessment."

Ballots issued to BMA consultants over new contracts
Twenty-six thousand consultants and 8,000 specialist registrars in England will be sent their ballot papers tomorrow to see if the proposed new consultant contract is acceptable to them. The ballot will be run by ERS (Electoral Reform Services). The closing date for the ballot is 10am Monday 20 October 2003.

Training budget shortfalls threatens NHS staff levels, says BMA
Shortfalls in the budget for doctors' training in England will have a "detrimental effect" on patient care and NHS staffing levels, the British Medical Association (BMA) has warned. In a briefing paper for MPs, the association called on the government to reinstate the funding to safeguard the quality of training.

New training programme for junior doctors launched
A new system of postgraduate medical training for junior doctors begins in the UK this week. Nearly 5,000 trainees are beginning the two-year Foundation Programme, which is replacing the existing house officers' years, this week.
