Many Injured In Salford 'Gas Explosion'

A suspected gas blast in Greater Manchester has left 15 people injured

Emergency services were called to Silver Street in Irlam, Salford shortly after 7am this morning, following reports of an explosion.

Four houses were destroyed in the blast, which ripped through the terraced house in the street. It is understood that refurbishment works had been carried out in the kitchen of the house at the centre of the explosion.

Five adults and two children were rescued and have been taken to Salford Royal Hospital for treatment. It is understood that a 76-year-old woman was badly injured in the blast and suffered 30% burns. She has been taken to Wythenshawe hospital for treatment, where she is said to be in a serious condition.

There had been fears that more people could be trapped in the wreckage and a search of the rubble was carried out, but it is now thought that everyone has been accounted for.

It is understood that the blast was heard up to six miles away.

Silver Street, Merlin Road, Morrillion Road, Cutnook Lane and a number of other routes in the area remain closed.

The Health and Safety Executive has begun an investigation, in conjunction with Greater Manchester Police, while City West Housing Trust, which owns the property at the centre of the blast, has also launched its own investigation into the incident.
