Tweet On The Beat Results In 3,205 Calls

Officers from Greater Manchester Police on a 24 hour tweet project have recorded a total of 3,205 calls.

Tweet on the beat highlighted how much time officers spend on "social work".

In a live 24-hour blog, details of every call, received by Manchester police, appeared on social network site Twitter. Up to 17,000 people followed the force's Twitter feed.

The Police blog began at 5am yesterday morning. By 8.30am, 360 calls from the public were already logged.

Yesterday's workload was described as "average" and reflected a typical day in the force.

Of the 341 people arrested, 126 remain in custody on suspicion of a variety of different offences.

Among the incidents recorded were shots fired in Salford, a child being attacked, a post office being ram-raided, a woman being raped and a car being found burnt out.

Chief Constable Peter Fahy commented: "We have tried to get a serious message out about the size of officers' workload."

"It's generated huge public and press interest and it has shown how social networking is an excellent way of getting out information out to the public.

"It shows how the types of calls change over the day, as it got later there were more calls about anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related incidents.

"We do get calls that are not directly related to our police work such as calls from people with relationship breakdowns, confused people, or sometimes we have callers who just can't deal with the problems life throws at them."

Ahead of next week's government's spending review, the force are preparing to face massive budget cuts. The tweeting operation hoped to highlight to Politicians the necessary workload police have to deal with.
