Aircraft In 'Near-Miss' Collision Over London

A business jet narrowly avoided a mid-air collision with a Turkish Airlines passenger plane in the skies over London, an accident report has revealed.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) report said that the German-owned Citation 525 plane, which had taken off from London City Airport was about 100ft to 200ft below and half a mile away from the Boeing 777 passenger plane, which was heading to Heathrow with 232 people on board, on July 29 last year.

The Citation, which was carrying two crew and a passenger, had been cleared by the control tower at London city Airport to climb to 3,000ft, but when this was acknowledged by the flight crew, they said they would be climbing to 4,000ft - a "readback" mistake, which wasn't noticed by the control tower.

Meanwhile, the Turkish Airlines flight had been cleared to descend to 4,000ft as it approached Heathrow and it was at this point that the two aircraft passed each other.

The AAIB report described the incident as "serious" and said that the crew of the Boeing 777 had not "followed the commands" of three on-board collision-avoidance warnings, while the Citation plane didn't even have the equipment on board.
