Police Officers 'Crash Seized Car'

Two police officers in Manchester have been suspended from driving duties after they crashed a car which had been seized from a suspected drink-driver.

The incident happened around 2:15am on Friday, when the officers spotted a Mitsubishi Lancer being driven erratically on Hale Road, Hale.

The car was stopped and the driver, a 23-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

He was taken into custody and the vehicle was authorised for recovery.

However, as the officers drove the car from the scene, the car crashed into two front gardens at the junction of Hale Road and Rydal Drive.

Two officers were in the car at the time - one suffered minor injuries, while the other was left severely shaken.

No-one else was injured in the incident.

The collision is now being investigated by officers from Greater Manchester Police's professional standards unit. Both officers have been suspended from driving duties with immediate effect.

Chief Superintendent Mark Roberts, Trafford divisional commander, said: "I can assure the local community that this incident will be rigorously investigated.

"Thankfully, no members of the public were injured. I would like to apologise to residents if this incident has caused any problems or inconvenience."
