Britain 'Not A Populaton Of Responsible Drinkers'
A new survey has claimed that Britain is a nation of 'irresponsible drinkers', with results showing that more than a quarter of drinkers exceed healthy limits each week.
The survey, by the North West Public Health Observatory, found an 8% annual increase in the number of people seeking hospital treatment for alcohol-related conditions. This included those directly caused by alcohol, such as liver cirrhosis, as well as those which may be caused by excessive alcohol intake, such as high blood pressure.
The survey also found stark divisions between the north and south in terms of problem drinking, with northerners tending to drink more, while more alcohol-related crimes were reported in London.
Two-thirds of the areas with the highest rate of alcohol-related harm were in the North, with Liverpool having the highest rate of hospital admissions, while London boroughs Newham, Westminster and Slough had the highest-rate of alcohol-related crimes in the capital.
The data also showed that there were 16,000 deaths in England last year as a result of alcohol.
Professor Mark Bellis said: "The price we pay for turning a blind eye to the real extent of alcohol abuse across England is reflected in the new Local Alcohol Profiles for England and it is a price that is paid especially by the poorest communities.
"It is time to recognise that we are not a population of responsible drinkers with just a handful of irresponsible individuals ruining it for others."

Alcohol-related deaths rise in UK
The number of alcohol-related deaths is rising in the UK, with some parts of the country reporting an almost 50% increase within four years. The figures, compiled by the Office of National Statistics and released in response to a parliamentary question by the Liberal Democrats, showed an increase of 18.
