Lewis Hamilton Fined For Driving Stunts
Formula 1 racing driver Lewis Hamilton has been fined for performing stunts in a borrowed Mercedes outside Melbourne's motor racing circuit.
Hamilton has been ordered to pay A$500 (£288) after he pleaded guilty to the charge of improper use of a motor vehicle.
Police caught the 2008 Formula 1 world champion executing "burnout" and "fishtail" tricks two days before the Australian Grand Prix in March.
Lawyer Sandip Mukerjea confirmed that Hamilton would not be present in court but he had written two letters explaining why.
He is due to drive in the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend.
Hamilton, 25, has publicly apologised over the incident saying he suffered "embarrassment, humiliation and distress" due to the media coverage.
Magistrate Clive Alsop said: "This is about somebody in a responsible position behaving like a hoon [boy racer]."
Mr Alop noted that Hamilton was a role model for young people and therefore had a responsibility to set a good example.
