M&S Gets New Boss
Marks & Spencer yesterday confirmed the appointment of former investment banker Robert Swannell as its new chairman. Aged 59, he is currently Chairman of the HMV Group, which owns the music chain and Waterstone's bookshops. However he will not be stepping down from that role, at least in the short-term, said Kleinman and M&S said it had no concerns over Mr Swannell remaining as chairman of HMV Group as the firms do not operate in competing spaces.
UCATT Backs Labour 'Tax Cut'
Construction union UCATT have welcomed an initiative by Labour leadership contender Ed Miliband to cut taxes paid by companies who guarantee paying a living wage to workers. Under the plans companies who set their rates of pay at a minimum of £7.60 an hour would pay lower rates of corporation tax compared to companies who were only prepared to abide by the national minimum wage level of £5.83 an hour. The policy would make a substantial difference in the construction industry where many construction workers, especially labourers, employed via employment agencies are forced to work far below living wage rates.
