Over 20 Hurt In Rail Crossing Crash
Twenty-one people have been injured after a train collided with a sewage tanker at a level crossing in Suffolk on Tuesday.
The incident happened around 5:30pm at Little Cornard, near Sudbury, when the lorry was struck by the 17:31 National Express East Anglia Service from Sudbury to Marks Tey.
The train driver is understood to have suffered a suspected fractured vertebrae, while another passenger suffered life-threatening abdominal injuries, but is now in a serious, but stable, condition, while another person was also flown to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge after the crash.
The lorry driver, who is 38 and from Cambridgeshire, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
The rear of the train's two carriages were derailed in the collision, while the lorry was split open, resulting in slurry being spilled over the scene.
It is understood that the crossing was on private land and had a locked gate and telephone. Anyone needed to cross would have to phone the signaller to raise the gates. However, a spokesperson for Network Rail said that the signaller had not received a phone call prior to the crash.
