Nick Clegg In Charge During PM's Holiday

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will be in charge of the coalition government for the next two weeks while Prime Minister David Cameron takes his summer holiday.

Downing Street has stressed that Mr Cameron will remain in overall control, while the Liberal Democrat leader will stand in for him at some events.

However, Mr Clegg is expected to use the opportunity to raise his profile and that of his party with a series of public town hall meetings.

Mr Clegg stressed that he was just "holding the fort" while Mr Cameron was on holiday and was not "acting prime minister".

Speaking at a public meeting in London today, the Deputy Prime Minister also said that he believed that the coalition government would remain in power for a full five-year term. However, he did say that he would be arguing for key points of his party's agenda during the next two weeks.

The Liberal Democrats have seen a drop in their poll ratings, since forming the coalition government with the Conservatives in May, while the Tories and Labour have increased their support.

Mr Cameron is spending a few days in his official residence at Chequers with his family, before travelling to Cornwall.
