Coastguard Save Teen, But Fall Girl Dies

There was both tragedy and good news for the Coastguard yesterday with a teenager successfully rescued from a cliff and separately, a youngster being killed in a similar incident.

Around 9.30pm last night, Milford Haven Coastguard received a 999 call reporting a boy stuck approximately 20 feet up a cliff at Newgale.

Coastguard rescue teams were called out from Broadhaven and St Davids, a rescue helicopter was requested as was the Little Haven RNLI inshore lifeboat who were able to illuminate the position of the man.

The Coastguards using their cliff rescue equipment lowered two officers down to the secure the man who was in a very precarious position.

Once he was secured, they were all lowered to the base of the cliff and it was quickly identified that it was in fact an 18-year-old, not an 11-year-old as believed by the caller.

The helicopter was stood down and returned to Chivenor as the man did not require medical attention and suitable safety advice was given.

Sadly, this incident followed a previous one that occurred at Perranporth beach - also yesterday - where in similar circumstances an 11-year-old girl had climbed 15 feet up cliffs and then slipped and fell.

Despite the best efforts of the RNLI lifeguards, members of the public and a PCSO and the air ambulance staff who airlifted her to hospital at Truro, the girl has been pronounced dead.

Neil Oliver, Falmouth Coastguard said: "This is a very tragic incident that has occurred.

"Her Majesty's Coastguard has been dealing with incidents yesterday around the coast of the UK involving climbing and getting stuck on cliffs.

"We would remind all, that cliffs can be dangerous and we would ask parents to ensure that their children are not placing themselves at risk," he advised, noting that "our sympathies are extended to this family at this very difficult time".
