Hunt Continues For Suspected Gunman

The search for the suspected fugitive armed killer Raoul Moat is continuing today.

It has been reported that police have found a camp where Mr Moat has been living since going on the run after shooting his former girlfriend, killing her new partner and shooting a police officer.

On Tuesday, a two-mile exclusion zone was placed around Rothbury in Northumberland as police hunting for the 37-year-old carried out searches in fields, woodland and empty farm buildings.

Armed officers were brought into the town following the discovery of a car which police had been seeking in connection with the investigation.

The exclusion zone was relaxed today, but the search for Mr Moat is continuing, and police are urging anyone who spots him to contact them immediately.

Mr Moat has been on the run since allegedly shooting his former girlfriend Samantha Stobbart, 22, and killing her boyfriend, Chris Brown, 29, in Birtley, Gateshead, in the early hours of Saturday.

The following day, Pc David Rathband, 42, was shot and wounded in Newcastle.

Pc Rathband suffered wounds to his face and upper body and underwent surgery. He is now said to be in a critical but stable condition. MIss Stobbart, who was shot twice, is said to be improving.

Mr Moat allegedly wrote a letter, which was sent to police and The Sun newspaper, which declared war on Northumbria Police, blaming them for the loss of his children, freedom and former girlfriend. The letter stated: "The public need not fear me, but the police should as I won't stop 'til I'm dead."

It has now emerged that a second letter was found in the tent discovered on Wednesday. It is believed to have been addressed to Miss Stobbart.

Mr Moat was released from prison last Thursday after serving an 18-week sentence for assault. Northumbria Police have confirmed that they had been warned that Mr Moat had threatened to seriously harm Miss Stobbart. The case has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Police also believe that Mr Moat may have been behind an armed robbery which was carried out at a fish and chip shop in Seaton Delaval on Monday night.

Mr Moat is described as white, 6ft 3ins tall, with short or shaved blond hair and a large muscular build.
