Solstice Marked

About 20,000 revellers were at Stonehenge this morning to mark the Summer Solstice. Police described the event on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire as one of the safest in years, although 34 people were arrested for minor drug offences. Sunrise, marking the longest day of the year north of the equator, occurred over the circle at 4.25am. The Heel Stone, just outside the main circle, aligns with the rising sun.

Death Driver Jailed

A teenage car driver, whose boyfriend died when she crashed while overtaking on a bend, has been jailed for 20 months. Emma Park, 19, of Borth, near Aberystwyth, admitted causing death by dangerous driving. Swansea Crown Court heard she tried to overtake a camper van and collided head-on with an articulated lorry. Her boyfriend, Seren Woodhouse, 18, suffered serious head injuries and died a few hours after the crash last July.

Yobs Beat Man Over Noise

A man who was thrown through a window and the repeatedly punched was attacked for telling youths to be quiet outside his Hampshire home. The 29-year-old was attacked in Birch Close, Bordon, on Friday around 10.20pm and sustained serious cuts to his arm and minor head injuries and was taken to the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford. Police officers were on the scene within minutes and chased the youths but they ran off into a nearby housing estate.

Tragedy Ends Donegal Rally

A rally co-driver has died in an accident at the Donegal International Rally. He was named last night as Thomas Maguire, aged in his 30s, from Longwood in County Meath.

The accident happened just after 3pm on Saturday when his vehicle went off the road south of Portsalon in the north of the county. The driver of the vehicle was critically injured and is being treated in hospital. The rest of the event has been cancelled and a memorial service will be held on Sunday morning.

Police Officer Fatally Shot In Florida
British teenager Alexandria Hollinghurst, 17, and her American boyfriend died on Saturday night after the pair allegedly shot to death police officer Robert German,31, in Orlando. According to US police officials, the couple were discovered in an undergrowth.

Teenager rescued from sea dies
A 15-year-old boy rescued from the sea off Norfolk has died. A lifeboat crew rescued the boy who had got into difficulties while swimming with another boy off Wells-Next-the-Sea, Norfolk. He was located by the lifeboat and was airlifted to hospital. But he later died shortly after being admitted to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

Teenager Dies In Car Crash
An 18-year-old man has died and three people have been injured in a car accident in Cornwall. The head-on crash involved a Rover Mini, a Renault Scenic and a Volkswagon Polo on the B3274 at Winnards Perch, at approximately 10.20pm last night. The driver of the Mini, a man from the Padstow area, died from his injuries.

Gas tanker crash driver dies
The driver of a gas tanker which crashed in Co. Durham on Wednesday has died in hospital. An exclusion zone has been set up in Wolsingham in County Durham after the tanker left the road and landed on a railway line. According to reports, the tanker came off the road and struck a bridge over the Weardale Railway before plunging onto the track.
