Doctor Who Game Hits Half A Million Downloads
A Sheffield games developer and Revolution's Charles Cecil, based in York, are celebrating 500,000 downloads of their first free Doctor Who: The Adventure Games episode.
Games developer Sumo Digital and Cecil achieved this in just two weeks.
The first episode, City of the Daleks, is an official BBC adventure game for PC and Mac featuring the voice talent and likenesses of Matt Smith and Karen Gillan.
"This incredible success for the first Doctor Who adventure game is proof again of the strength and talent of Yorkshire's games industry," said Jamie Sefton, Sector Manager of Game Republic at Screen Yorkshire.
He added: "Sheffield's Sumo Digital won the pitch to develop the game against more than a dozen other games companies from around the world, so it's a fantastic achievement."
In the first episode, the TARDIS materializes in 1963 - and London is in ruins. The Daleks have seized control of time and the only chance of saving Earth lies in a desperate quest to Skaro, the Daleks' home planet - before time catches up with Amy, the last survivor of the human race.
Along with Charles Cecil (Creator of Broken Sword), Sumo Digital is also busy making a further three "interactive episodes" of Doctor Who to complement the TV series in this unique and groundbreaking new collaboration with the BBC.
Doctor Who: The Adventure Games has also been nominated for a prestigious Develop Industry Excellence Award for Best Use of a Licence or IP, with Sumo Digital also nominated for Best Independent Studio.
The Doctor Who game is available for all UK fans to download for free at: www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/dw/theadventuregames
