Grim Afghanistan Total Rises Again
The tragic total of UK service deaths is now edging toward 300 with news just in that two British soldiers have been shot dead in separate incidents in Afghanistan.
The killings bring the number of UK personnel killed in Afghanistan since 2001 to 298.
The soldiers, both from 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, died in the Nad Ali district of Helmand Province on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Defence said they were on security patrol when they came under fire. Next of kin have been informed.
Their deaths follow that of a Royal Marine from 40 Commando who died of conflict injuries in a UK hospital just hours earlier.
The soldier was hit in a gun battle in Sangin on Sunday.

Commander calls for more Nato troops for Afghanistan
Nato's top commander has urged member nations to provide more troops in Afghanistan to support the current battle against Taliban militants. General James Jones said that the military alliance had been surprised by the "level of intensity" of attacks in southern Afghanistan since Nato troops moved into the region in July.

A British charity worker has been gunned down in the Afghan capital - in an assassination reportedly carried out by the Taliban. Gayle Williams, who worked for Christian charity Serve Afghanistan, was shot dead close to Kabul University.

British troops have now left one of the deadliest districts in southern Afghanistan, handing over responsibility to American forces - with two more tragic fatalities to mark the past weekend. Around 1,000 British troops in Sangin are to redeploy to central Helmand.

Another soldier has been killed in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said. The death brings the number of UK troops killed on operations in Afghanistan since 2001 to 87. He was killed and several others were injured when their vehicle was blown up by a mine 3km (1.8 miles) north east of Musa Qala, the MoD statement said.
