Parents Hang Themselves Over Fear Their Son May Be Killed

A couple hanged themselves within weeks of each other over fears their soldier son would be killed while serving in Afghanistan.

The mother of an army bomb disposal expert killed herself while her son was in Afghanistan because she feared that he would not return home alive, an inquest was told.

Days after her funeral, the father of Lance Corporal Alan Davis was found hanged in almost identical circumstances after leaving a suicide note explaining that he could not live without his beloved wife.

Bomb disposal expert Lance Corporal Davis, 37, had just flown back to Afghanistan after his mother’s funeral when he got news that his father had also killed himself.

In a note to his son, John Davis wrote: "I just want to be with Doreen. I am so sorry, you don't deserve this. Please forgive me. I am so proud of you."

The hearing was told that Mrs Davis, 69, feared her son would die in a Taliban bomb blast and was on medication to deal with her anxiety.

Doctors revealed she had told them the worry was "killing her" shortly before she took her own life, The Daily Mail reported.

An only child, Lance Corporal Davis did not attend yesterday's inquest in Basingstoke, England.

But in a statement he said he would never have returned to Afghanistan if he had any concerns about his father's mental state.
