Man Arrested In Mersey Murder Probe
Police in Merseyside have launched a murder investigation after the discovery of the body of an elderly woman in Stoneycroft yesterday.
Emergency services were called at arround 10.40pm on Tuesday to a report of a fire at a property on Gorsewood Road, Belle Vale.
The fire was extinguished by the fireservice and a search was conducted of the property. No one was injured during the incident.
A short time later a 38-year-old man from the local area was arrested nearby on suspicion of arson.
Officers then conducted a search of the man's home address on Moscow Drive at about 12.30am yesterday where they found the body of an elderly female believed to be in her 70s.
The woman had received an injury believed to have been caused by a knife.
Detectives said they are continuing to investigate and a Home Office Post Mortem is due to take place to establish the cause of death.
The woman has not yet been formally identified.
The 38-year-old man arrested on suspicion of arson is also to be questioned about the death of this woman. He remains in custody.
Detective Superintendent Ian Mulcahey said: "At this early stage of the investigation we are working to piece together what has happened. The victim was found at the property this morning and we are appealing for anyone who has any information to come forward.
"We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has any information to get in touch with us."

A woman and two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of an 18-year-old man in Garston, Liverpool, on Tuesday. A 31-year-old man and 32-year-old woman were arrested at a house in Garston on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. And a 20-year-old man was arrested at a different address on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

A man and a woman have been arrested in Wokingham on suspicion of preparing for acts of terrorism. Officers from the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) arrested the 24-year-old man, from the Palmer Park area of Reading, and 23-year-old woman, from Earley in Wokingham, at about 19:30 on Thursday 28 May.

At around 7pm on Monday police responded to a call that a man had been hit by a bus in Henshaw Street. A short time later, police then attended Royal Oldham Hospital following a report that a woman had been admitted with stab wounds.
