Tovil Residents Evacuated
More than 40 homes in Tovil, Kent were evacuated last night as local fire services battled a blaze at a residential garage.
Emergency teams arrived at a block of garages on Beaconsfield Road late yesterday and extinguished the fire, however crews have remained in position over fears gas canisters in the vicinity could ignite.
Shortly before Midnight Kent Police put a 200m cordon around the residential area while fire crews made the area secure.
Approximately 40 houses in the area were affected and residents who are not staying with friends or families have been directed to a rest centre at Mote Park Leisure Centre.
Police are working with Kent County Council and other partner agencies, to make resources available to those unable to get to their homes.
Kent Police's Inspector David Coleman said: "To ensure everyone's safety it was necessary to put this cordon in place. Residents can also be assured that we have increased police presence around the cordon to ensure it remains secure.
"We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused to those residents and business owners within the cordon and thank the community for their assistance during this time whilst KFRS carry out their duties."
Beaconsfield Road and Wharf Road have been closed due to the cordon. There is a small industrial estate within the cordon and therefore this will also be affected.

Man Arrested Over Kent Doctor's Murder
A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a doctor in Kent. Consultant paediatrician Dr Victoria Anyetei, 54, was found in her car in the driveway of her home in Dartford on August 14. She had been stabbed to death. Kent Police said that the man was arrested on suspicion of murder at an address in Dartford.

A huge clean-up operation is taking place in Birmingham, after a freak tornado ripped through the city on Thursday. Birmingham was hit by winds of up to 130mph on Thursday afternoon, which damaged buildings, ripped roofs from houses, over-turned cars and uprooted trees.

On 3 May, Kent Police began a search for Michael Wheatley, 55, who had failed to return to HMP Standford Hill after being released on temporary licence.
