Soldier Killed Near Sangin

A British solider has died after being caught in an explosion in Afghanistan's Helmand province.

Confirming the fatality this morning, the Ministry of Defence said the soldier had served in A Company, 3rd Battalion The Rifles (3 RIFLES). He was part of the 3 RIFLES Battle Group.

The soldier died as a result of an explosion which occurred in an area 3km south of Sangin district centre in Helmand province earlier today.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, said: "The soldier was operating in support of a foot patrol when, as he crossed a small bridge, he was struck by an IED. His bravery and selfless commitment to his comrades and to this fight will not be forgotten."

This incident was not connected to Operation MOSHTARAK, a military spokesman said.

Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
