Drinking Ban Order Granted
Essex Police has obtained a Drinking Banning Order against a 23-year-old man from Harlow.
The order - the first for the force - was granted at Harlow Magistrates Court against Wesley Jones.
It is only the third of its kind ever to be issued in the UK.
Jones is not allowed to enter the 48 licensed premises in Harlow listed in the Behave or Be Banned Scheme.
He cannot be drunk in a public place within the town of Harlow, and also prohibits him from consuming or having alcohol in his possession in these areas.
The order also gives Jones the option to attend an alcohol awareness course, reducing the duration of the order from 18 months to 12 months if he choses to do so.
Sgt Lewis Basford, of Harlow Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "Alcohol fuelled offending causes misery to the general public who wish to drink moderately in our licensed premises.
"If Jones agrees to the term of the order and successfully completes an alcohol awareness course then his conditions will reduce by six months."
Sgt Basford said he and his officers will continue to use current and future legislation to address the issues faced within local communities.
"Local Magistrates have issued numerous warrants in relation to the recovery of stolen property as well as drug offences," he said.
"This application is another extension to the work that is being done by the Neighbourhood Team to support the community. We also continue to engage with the community through various public meetings and forums enabling us to work together"
The legislation is new and was only passed by Parliament in August 2009. It is aimed at tackling those who continually cause havoc in licensed premises.
Drinking Banning Orders (DBO) are civil orders. A DBO can be made against an individual aged at least 16 if he or she has engaged in criminal or disorderly conduct while under the influence of alcohol and the court considers that such an order is necessary.
Breaches of the order are an offence punishable by a fine and/or imprisonment.
