Parliamentary Pay Rises

MPs' annual salaries are to increase by around £1000 in April, it was confirmed today.

The average salary for a Commons Parliamentarian will rise to £65,737 a year.

A decision to increase pay by 1.5% was taken following months of furore over MPs' expenses.

The move also comes amid public sector pay freezes and worsening conditions in the private sector.

Parliamentary salary changes, which used to be voted upon by MPs, are now controlled by a review board.

Government ministers will not accept the 1.5% rise on Cabinet salaries, Downing Street said.

Ministerial positions currently carry an extra £79,754 per year, giving members of the Government a total salary of £144,520.

Tories have pledged to cut ministers' salaries by 5% if they come to power at the forthcoming general election.

Senior Salaries Review Body chair Bill Cockburn wrote to Commons Speaker John Bercow at the end of February to inform him of the rise.

Unions have blasted the increase, citing the 1.4 million civil servants in England, Wales and Northern Ireland whose pay has remained static to protect front-line services and minimise job losses.
