Scotland To Assess Schools' Management
The issue of how schools in Scotland are managed and potential changes to their control by local authorities is being highlighted by the Parliament's Education, Lifelong Learning and Culture Committee which is calling for evidence on the subject.
The matter of how schools are managed has already featured in much of the committee’s work on class size, the Curriculum for Excellence and the provision of free school meals.
In light of the ongoing debate about alternative models for managing schools in Scotland, the committee believes it is now the right time to consider the issue.
Committee Convener Karen Whitefield MSP said: "How Scottish schools are, and should be, managed is fundamental to the successful delivery of education to nursery, primary and secondary level children. The committee would therefore welcome input from anyone with a view on this matter."
The committee is seeking views to inform its consideration of the issue before it takes a decision on whether to proceed with an inquiry.
The committee has also commissioned the Parliament’s Information Centre (SPICe) to provide a briefing on the structure of state schooling across the UK and internationally.

Schools 'failing' one million pupils
Around a million pupils in England are receiving inadequate education, the National Audit Office (NAO) has reported. The NAO report said that 1,577 schools in England were performing poorly by July last year. However, the report also said that the number of failing schools had halved between 1998 and 2005.

Specialist schools improving faster than other schools
Specialist schools are performing better than other schools in England, a report by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) has reported. The education watchdog found that pupils in specialist schools have performed better at GCSEs since 1998 and the rate of improvement in GCSE results was also faster in these schools.
