Latest Afghan Fatalities Named
The Ministry of Defence has released the names of two men killed in Afghanistan's Helmand at the weekend, and the identity of a further fatality on Monday.
Corporal John Moore and Private Sean McDonald of The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (1 SCOTS), part of the 3 RIFLES Battle Group, died following an explosion on Sunday.
Warrant Officer Class 2 David Markland from 36 Engineer Regiment, a specialists responsible for conducting route clearances, was killed in Afghanistan on Monday.
Corporal Moore, 22, from Bellshill, in Lanarkshire, operated mainly from Patrol Base Wishtan in the Sangin area of Helmand Province.
He had been conducting operations to provide security and development to the local nationals.
Corporal Moore was commanding his section on a routine night patrol to the south of the Company Base on the evening of the 7 February when an IED detonated killing him and his lead man Private Sean McDonald.
His family paid tribute to the 'proud' Scotsman.
"Johnathan was a proud Scottish Soldier who was doing a job that he loved; he will be sadly missed by a loving and very proud family. The Army and his family were Johnathan's life we are devastated at our loss."
Private McDonald, 26, born in Toronto, was responsible for clearing the ground of improvised explosive devices to allow both ISAF and local nationals to walk the streets without fear of death or serious injury.
He leaves behind his wife Jennifer, his mother Jacqueline and his brother, Darryle McDonald, and his sister, Ceilidh Spratt.
Private McDonald's mother said: "My son was so proud to be a soldier. He will be desperately missed by all family and friends. This tragedy has left a hole in our lives and a hole in our heart. Sleep well Baby Boy."
Lieutenant Colonel Nick Kitson, Commanding Officer 3 RIFLES Battle Group, said: "Time and time again, day in, day out, he risked his life for his mates, the mission and better prospects for an oppressed local population."
Warrant Officer Class 2 Markland was described as a "robust and fit individual" who had a passion for camping, mountaineering and trekking.
He leaves behind his wife Corallee and their two young sons.
A family statement read: "We are very proud of Dave's achievements in his Army career; his soldiers, friends and officers all respected his selflessness and admired his style of leadership.
"He will be sadly missed and leaves behind a family who he loved and loves him very, very much. We are all very proud of our hero."

He raised more than £3m for charity. His mother, Jane Sutton said the service, which will be at the Lichfield Cathedral, would be a celebration of his life.

Father-To-Be Dies On Duty In Helmand
A soldier who was killed a month after arriving in Afghanistan was due to become a father. Private Gregg Thomas Stone, 20, was shot dead on Sunday in Helmand province. He was taking part in a mission to rescue police officer Abdul Walid from an insurgent checkpoint. Stone, from Hull, was expecting his first child with his wife Samantha.

The 23-year-old New Zealand-born soldier was killed while on patrol against insurgents in Helmand province.
