Woman Dies In Traffic Collision

Police have appealed for witnesses after a woman died in a road traffic collision at Chale on the Isle of Wight.

At around 12.50pm on Sunday, January 24, a red VW Polo collided with a white Suzuki motorcycle on the Military Road.

The Polo, which was travelling from Chale, was turning right onto Southdown across the path of the oncoming motorbike.

Ambulance crews tried to save the front seat passenger, a 23-year-old woman from Freshwater, but she was pronounced dead on arrival at St Mary’s Hospital.

The driver, a 23-year-old man also from Freshwater, suffered minor injuries and was admitted to St Mary’s Hospital overnight for observation.

The motorcyclist, a 22-year-old Newport man, was airlifted to the intensive care unit of Southampton General Hospital with serious multiple injuries.

The road had to be closed until 10pm to allow for a full investigation and recovery of the scene.

Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either of the vehicles prior to it.
