Man Jailed For Drug Possession
A Cheetham Hill man who was caught a number of times with drugs, cash and stolen mobile phones has been jailed.
Usman Majeed, 23, of Broomfield Drive was found guilty after a trial at Manchester Crown Square Crown Court of possession of cannabis with intent to supply, possession of a class A drug with intent to supply and two counts of money laundering.
He also pleaded guilty to two counts of handling stolen goods and an offence under the Identity Card Act (attempting to use someone else's passport) at an earlier hearing.
Majeed was sentenced to a total of five years, nine months in prison.
On 21 January 2009, Majeed was caught with a van full of cannabis plants after police attended an address on Almshill Road in Cheetham Hill. The house the van was near to also had cannabis plants inside.
In total, 260 plants were seized.
Large amounts of cash, bankcards, a number of mobile phones and a driving licence in Majeed's name were seized from his house on Broomfield Drive.
The driving licence and bankcards were returned, but the cash was seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
Police inquiries established that the mobile phones had been stolen from women in bars in Manchester city centre.
Majeed was arrested on 23 June on suspicion of stealing the phones and money laundering.
When he arrived at the police station, he was found to be carrying a package contained crack cocaine.
In July Majeed tried to leave the country with a significant amount of cash. He was arrested at Manchester Airport after trying to board a flight to Dubai with his twin brother's passport.
Detective Sergeant Damien Gething said: "Our investigation has shown that Majeed is a relentless crook who will do almost anything to make money.
"He abused the police bail system as our inquiries into him continued, and I am glad that we have finally found justice."
