More Wintry Weather Predicted
Snowy conditions and sub-zero temperatures are set to spread across the UK, the Met Office warned today.
According to forecasters, the cold snap could linger over the coming weeks.
Snow fall is predicted to widen, with few areas across the country expected to remain unaffected.
Authorities in Scotland have warned there are not enough salt and grit supplies to deal with ongoing ice and frost.
Severe weather warnings have been issued in the Highlands and Eilean Siar.
Widespread ice has been forecast for Orkney and Shetland, Grampian and Northern Ireland.
Temperatures in parts of the Scottish Highlands and Wales dropped to -12C last night.
Forecasters say the freeze is a result of very cold easterly wind feeding in direct from Siberia.
Rail commuters suffered delays across parts of England this morning, with up to one hour stoppages from London's Liverpool Street station.
AA said it had responded to 6,000 call outs between midnight and 8am. A spokesman said it expects to service 22,000 more drivers today.
Scottish Finance Secretary John Swinney has played down concerns from Renfrewshire Council, which suggested supplies of salt had "effectively run out".
Mr Swinney said "very substantial" amounts of grit were available, adding there would be "pinch points" in different parts of the country because of issues around about delivery.
"There's a lot of supply around. We just have to make sure its in the right places," he added.
