Tube Memorial For Menezes

A permanent memorial will be erected in the south London Tube station where Jean Charles de Menezes was shot dead by police.

Transport authorities have given the go ahead for a mosaic to be installed at Stockwell station in memory of the 27-year-old Brazilian.

It will replace an improvised display made up of pictures, candles and newspaper clippings.

Counter terrorism officers shot Mr de Meneze seven times as he walked through the station on 22 July 2005.

He was mistakenly identified as a suicide bomber.

Last year a coroner returned an open verdict on the events which lead to Mr de Meneze's death.

His family received a six-figure compensation package from the Metropolitan Police last month.

Vivian Figueiredo, a cousin of Mr de Meneze welcomed the establishment of a memorial.

"The pain of never achieving justice for Jean's killing continues to haunt us every day," she said.

"But knowing his memory will be kept alive in the local community through this memorial is a tribute we could not have dreamed of."

The mosaic will be designed by local artist Mary Edwards, and be unveiled next year.
