Manchester Gas Explosions

There were two gas explosions in south Manchester today.

At around 8.50am this morning, police were called to the site of the old Withington Hospital following a report of an explosion.

A second explosion in the same area took place about an hour later, and it is believed that this was caused by the first.

One man, believed to be in his 40s, has been injured and is receiving treatment to burns. His condition is not believed to be life threatening.

The site has been evacuated, and more buildings may be evacuated by the emergency services, police said.

Nell Lane and Elisabeth Slinger Road remained closed to traffic on Tuesday afternoon.

All of the emergency services have sent substantial resources.

Police said inquiries are ongoing.
