Brothers Jailed For Attempted Murder
Two brothers have been jailed for a total of 35 years each for an attempted murder in New Cross, London.
Derrell Callender, 20, of Leybridge Court, Eltham Road, Lee Green, and Dwight Callender, 23, of Rollinson House, Mercator Road, Lewisham both appeared at Central Criminal Court on 1 December charged with two counts of attempted murder after they were arrested in May.
The two men were jailed for running a man down who was then shot and stabbed in a vicious gang war.
The court heard that the brothers sped their van towards the intended target, Mohammed Turay, 19, after an argument but instead ploughed into his 17-year-old friend Johnson Ndjoli.
The Callender brothers drove along Sanford Street intentionally crushing the 17-year-old against railings, causing serious head injuries. The van was then used intentionally to run over the original target.
As the 17-year-old lay bleeding on the pavement he was shot in the chest and was stabbed in the neck.
Officers soon identified Dwight Callender as the driver of the van, and his brother Derrell as the passenger, who was said to have actively picked out the targets in the street.
The 17-year-old victim remains in a coma and doctors do not expect him to survive. Mr Turay escaped without serious injury.
The two brothers were found guilty by a unanimous decison of two counts of attempted Murder.
For the attempted murder of the 17-year-old each defendant was sentenced to 25 years custody.
For the attempted murder of the 19-year-old each defendant received ten years custody. The sentences are to be served consecutively.
