MPs' Standards Chief Quits Amid Expenses Probe

The head of the Commons standards body has quit his position pending an inquiry into his own expenses allegedly worth almost £30,000.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Conservative party MP David Curry

claimed £28,078 from the public purse for the cost of running a second home that his wife barred him from using after he had an affair.

Mr Curry stood down late last night and now faces a formal inquiry into the allegations.

In a statement, Mr Curry said: "I used the cottage to carry out my duties as a constituency MP (member of parliament) and am content with my arrangements.

"However, given the particular responsibilities of the chairman of the Committee of Standards and Privileges, I shall refer my case to the Commissioner on Parliamentary Standards John Lyon and will stand down from the chairmanship during the course of his inquiries."

The newspaper reported that Mr Curry's wife had barred him from using the cottage as a condition of their marital reconciliation and that he usually stayed at a Travelodge when he was in his constituency.

Curry admitted the affair but likened the reports of being banned from the cottage to the tale of Harry Potter.

The Daily Telegraph published a series of leaks earlier this year showing many MPs making "unreasonable" claims under the old additional costs allowance, which allowed them to recoup up to £24,000 per year for second home running costs.
