Goa Death Mum Up For Benefit Fraud

The mother of a British teenager whose body was found on a beach in Goa has been charged with falsely claiming more over £50,000 in income support.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has accused Fiona MacKeown, 44, of claiming £51,401 of support by deception while failing to declare other income.

MacKeown, of Bideford, Devon, is due to appear before Barnstaple magistrates on December 3.

The charge spans the three-year period between 2 February 2005 and March 2008. This covers the time when MacKeown had taken a six-month family holiday with her daughter to Goa.

The body of Scarlett Keeling, 15, was found on the beach at Anjuna, Goa, on February 19 2008.

Scarlett was left in the care of a 25-year-old tour guide while the rest of the family went travelling.

Initially Indian investigators suspected she had drowned, however a second post-mortem examination revealed evidence of attack injuries.

In September, India's Central Bureau of Investigation filed charges against two men Samson D'Souza and Placido Carvalho.

The two were charged with culpable homicide, assault with intent to outrage a woman's modesty and administering a stupefying drug with intent to harm. Both are on bail.

Ms MacKeown has been told that her daughter's body will not be released until the conclusion of the trial.
