UK 'Rejects' Swine Flu Jab
A medical publication has discovered that just over half of Britons being offered vaccination against pandemic H1N1 flu are turning it down.
It is said to be because they fear side-effects or think the virus is too mild to bother, a survey of doctors showed Wednesday.
Many of the 107 family doctors polled by Pulse magazine said there was widespread resistance from patients and on average only 46% of those offered the vaccination agree to have it.
Doctors reported particular difficulties in persuading pregnant women to be vaccinated against the virus, according to Pulse, a specialist newspaper for doctors.
"In all the pregnant women we've offered it to, I think only about one in 20 has agreed," Dr Chris Udenze, a family doctor based in Nottingham said in the survey.
Scepticism has been growing in Britain and other European countries about health authorities' handling of the H1N1 pandemic because the number of people infected has been lower than originally feared.
Britain began a vaccination program on October 21 for high-risk hospital patients, front-line healthcare workers, children in seasonal flu risk groups, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems.

Flu Vaccination Delayed For 'More Advice'
The Department of Health has said on Thursday that it needs further advice from the committee looking into the flu vaccine before it can roll out a larger programme. The announcement follows a request from Health Secretary Andrew Lansley to look at whether the flu vaccination programme should be extended to healthy children.

Ballots issued to BMA consultants over new contracts
Twenty-six thousand consultants and 8,000 specialist registrars in England will be sent their ballot papers tomorrow to see if the proposed new consultant contract is acceptable to them. The ballot will be run by ERS (Electoral Reform Services). The closing date for the ballot is 10am Monday 20 October 2003.
