100 Arrests In Newport Drugs Swoop

Police in Newport have arrested over 100 people as part of a co-ordinated two month crackdown on organised crime.

Most of the arrests, made as part of Operation Prudent, were related to the use and supply of illegal drug.

A total of 113 arrests have been made so far.

Eleven people were arrested for possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply, with a further 13 arrested for possession of controlled drugs.

Five were arrested for possession of an offensive weapon, one person was arrested for possession of a firearm, and another arrested for possession of firearm ammunition.

Seven arrests were made regarding robberies, with four detained for burglaries.

A dozen people face charges relating to theft or fraud, with two others arrested for causing criminal damage.

Three people were detained for driving under the influence of alcohol, with a further 27 arrests made for public order offences

Police raids resulted in the discovery of one kilogram of heroin, one kilogram of cocaine and one kilogram of amphetamines.

Officers also found half a kilogram of crack cocaine and dismantled two cannabis factories.

In addition to this £28,000 worth of assets were seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Over 120 motoring offences were also detected and 424 people were stopped and searched.

DCI Ian Roberts, leading Operation Prudent, is encouraged by the results so far and believes Prudent is having the desired impact.

"Drug dealing has been a prime concern for people living in Pill this year and by targeting this we have identified offenders responsible for further criminal activity in the area," he said.

"I want to assure residents that we are taking a very hard line on illegal supply of drugs and are working closely with the organisations that help those who want to leave drug taking in their past and turn their lives around."
