Protest Minister Seeks 'Fresh Challenge'

Jane Kennedy, who resigned from Gordon Brown's Cabinet in protest at Labour's poor European election polling, is to stand down as an MP.

The former environment minister said she is seeking a "fresh challenge" following 18 years in the Commons.

Ms Kennedy has held several high profile government posts throughout her political career.

Her decision to leave ministerial office in June came amid seven other front bench resignations.

They, along with other party members, attempted to put pressure on the Prime Minister to step aside, after Labour suffered serious losses in the European Parliamentary elections.

Writing to Labour supporters in her Wavertree constituency, Ms Kennedy said she had contemplated the decision not to seek re-election for some time.

She said the area needed a Labour candidate who could "bring the necessary enthusiasm and fresh leadership to our campaign".

"It [the decision] has been made after careful thought and reflection and is, I believe, in the best interests of the party that I have been proud to serve for the last 30 years.

"I am now absolutely confident that the party will go on to win Wavertree in 2010," she added.
