Manchester Gun Pair Sentenced

Two teenagers have been sentenced after a loaded firearm was recovered in the Manchester suburbs.

Sammy Geldard, 19, of Pattishall Close, Ancoats and Chanelle Merryweather, 17, pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm at Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square, at an earlier hearing.

Geldard was jailed for five years and Merryweather was sentenced to a two-year Supervision Order, with conditions attached, at Preston Crown Court.

Just after 8.30pm on Thursday 30 April 2009, officers on patrol in Ardwick were informed that a man and girl were in possession of a firearm.

Geldard and Merryweather were stopped on Stockport Road as part of the inquiry and a pistol was recovered from a bag being carried by the girl.

The gun was forensically examined and found to be a Browning Pistol, which was loaded with two bullets.

Detective Constable David Ogden from Longsight CID said: "We will continue to work tirelessly to make sure people who think it is acceptable to carry these dangerous weapons are punished.

"We don't know why they had the gun but it is extremely concerning that such a young girl would be carrying a loaded weapon.

"I would urge anyone with information about people carrying or hiding firearms to speak to the police as we always act on intelligence given to us."
