Man Arrested In Milly Murder Inquiry

Police investigating the murder of Surrey schoolgirl Milly Dowler have arrested a 40-year-old man.

The west London man, believed to be a scrap dealer, had voluntarily attended a police station earlier today and was arrested by police on suspicion of assisting an offender.

It is understood that the man is being questioned about the possible disposal of a red Daewoo Nexia car, which had been sought in the investigation into 13-year-old Milly's murder.

According to reports, the man is Nirmal Gharu, who was originally interviewed by police about the disposal of such a car, in August.

Earlier this month, police had searched Bedford Lake, near Heathrow Airport, for the car, but the search was unsuccessful.

Amanda Dowler, known as Milly to family and friends, disappeared while walking home from school in Walton-on-Thames in March 2002. Her body was found in September that year on Yateley Heath, Hampshire.

Police are currently trying to build evidence against convicted killer Levi Bellfield, the prime suspect in the case. The 41-year-old former bouncer is currently serving a whole-life sentence for the murders of Marsha McDonnell, 19 and 22-year-old Amelie Delagrange.

The Crown Prosecution Service was given a dossier of circumstantial evidence against him in August.
