Park Rapists Jailed

Two men have been jailed for raping and then robbing a 21-year-old woman during a two-and-a-half hour ordeal in St James' Park.

Callem Fearnehough, 21, of Millfield, Six Acres Estate N4 was convicted on 25 September following a trial at Southwark Crown Court.

Ismail Acar, 21, of Millfield, Six Acres Estate N4 entered a guilty plea on the second day of the trial on 8 September.

A third man - Dimitri McKenzie-Saunders - was acquitted on all charges.

Fearnehough was sentenced to a total of ten years, eight years imprisoment on two counts of rape and to two years imprisonment for robbery.

The rape and robbery sentences are to run consecutively.

Acar was sentenced to a total of 13 years, which was 11 years imprisonment on three counts of rape and to two years imprisonment for robbery.

The rape and assault sentences are to run concurrently; the robbery sentence is to run consecutively.

DS Ivon Beer (Westminster Sapphire) said: "We are very pleased with today's sentencing, which reflects the seriousness of the attack. We hope this acts as a deterrent to prevent such horrific attacks in future.

"I would like to convey my appreciation for the courage and dignity displayed by the victim throughout."

The offences occurred in the early hours of Monday 25 August 2008.

A 21-year-old New Zealand national, who was in the UK on a working holiday visa, had been working and then enjoyed a few drinks with friends after missing the last Tube home.

She caught the night bus at around 2am, at which point she met the three men. They all sat together at the back of the bus.

The victim was taken to St James' Park with the three men. Once inside the park, Acar and Fearnehough subjected her to a brutal series of sexual assaults.

At one point, the woman attempted to escape but was caught again.

The two men also robbed her of her jewellery and her bag, containing cash, bankcards and an iPod.

Acar made an unsuccessful attempt to use her bankcards at an ATM in Charing Cross, after she gave a false PIN number.

The victim eventually managed to escape and sought help from a security guard at the park, who called police at nearly 5am.

Acar and Fearnehough were arrested two hours later on Horse Guards Road, after two PCSOs recognised them from their description.
