Murder Inquiry Follows Trafalgar Square Assault

A murder inquiry has been launched following the death of a man who was assaulted in an attack in Trafalgar Square last month.

Ian Baynham, 62, from Beckenham, Kent, died yesterday after being assaulted on a night out in London in September.

Mr Baynham has travelled into London with a friend and got off the No.24 bus in Duncannon Street around 10.45pm on September 25.

The pair walked into Trafalgar Square and became involved in an argument with a group of three people outside South Africa House, during which Mr Baynham was punched and kicked.

His 30-year-old friend also received minor injuries in the incident.

Mr Baynham was taken to a London hospital suffering from head injuries and died yesterday. A post mortem has been scheduled.

Police have described the incident as a "vicious homophobic attack".

The investigation, which was being conducted by Westminster detectives, will now be handled by the Homicide and Serious Crime Command and the police have also reissued an appeal for information.

Last week, CCTV images showing two women who were in the Trafalgar Square area at the time of the incident were released and police are keen to identify them as they may have information which is valuable to the investigation.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact: 0207 321 9314 or Crimestoppers anonymously on: 0800 555 111.
