Baby Death, Not Swine Flu
Cardiac problems and not swine flu caused the death of a local infant, the Department of Health has confirmed.
A spokesperson said that the infant - understood to have died in the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children - had however tested positive for the illness, while the child's heart condition was the cause of death.
This was at first thought to be the second NI swine flu victim, after Co Antrim cancer victim, Caroline Hoy died from the swine flu virus.
And in July, 30-year-old soldier Lee Porter, who was born in Coleraine, died in a hospital in England from swine flu.
Health Minister Michael McGimpsey last night extended his sympathy to the baby's family at what he described as a "tragic and very sad time".
There have now been 217 laboratory confirmed cases in Northern Ireland, although the number of clinically diagnosed cases stands at almost 9,000.
A total of 94 people have been hospitalised.

Birthday Celebrations End Tragically
A young woman from Belfast died last week in Spain after contracting swine flu and also developing pneumonia. Corinna Ritchie, a hairdresser, went to Ibiza to celebrate her 21st birthday and became ill while on holiday on the island.

Swine Flu Claims Latest NI Victim
There has been another fatality from swine flu with yesterday's Department of Health's weekly flu bulletin revealing a further flu related death. This brings the total to 17, as at 6 January, officially - although two other local people have died outside NI from the virus.

The number of visits being made to local GPs by people who fear swine flu infection is continuing to rise. Amid fears of a 'second wave' of infections, the Department of Health's latest weekly flu bulletin - for the week ending Friday 25 September, gives a good representation of the level of flu activity across Northern Ireland.

As the priority groups who will be first to receive the swine flu vaccine were being revealed today, the Department of Health has also published the weekly flu bulletin. There were 12 new cases of laboratory confirmed swine flu during week 32, (last week) but the total number of such clinically tested cases in Northern Ireland has yet to reach 100.
