Irish Swine Flu Alert Continues
There is news today of a further infection with swine flu in the Irish Republic - this time involving a primary age school child.
It comes on foot of yesterday's developments which saw the Department of Health confirming another case of swine flu in Northern Ireland.
This brings the total number of cases in NI to 14, with the latest case being a female who recently returned from the USA.
She has mild flu symptoms and is recovering at home.
The Public Health Agency is arranging a follow-up of people who were in close contact with her since she developed symptoms.
Overall, this means the number of cases under investigation in Northern Ireland stands at eight, while the number of negative cases cleared as not being swine flu is 152.
The Irish Republic now has 16 cases with the latest being a national school pupil in Co Mayo.
This includes two new cases that have been reported in the last 24 hours.
The Department of Health says all public health protection measures are being taken.
The parents of the pupils of his school at Castlebar and those who have been in contact with the child are being contacted.
The World Health Organisation, which recently raised the level of pandemic alert to Phase 6, has registered over 39,000 cases of the virus in 83 countries. There have been 167 deaths.
