Hillsborough Tragedy Recalled
A death toll that shocked the world is being recalled today as Liverpool soccer supporters lead a sombre minute of respect to mark the 20th anniversary of the most tragic football-related disaster in British sporting history.
A total of 96 supporters lost their lives at the 1989 FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough.
The match was abandoned six minutes into the first-half when it became clear that Liverpool supporters were being pressed against steel fencing and the scale of the harrowing events unfolded.
An unprecedented number of fans had entered the Leppings Lane end of the Sheffield stadium after police had earlier feared crushing at the turnstiles.
As well as the numerous fatalities, hundreds were injured and thousands left traumatised.
Football stadia around the country were converted to all-seating arenas in the aftermath of Hillsborough
Today, the families, Liverpool officials and players, plus thousands of fellow football fans will be present at the annual act of remembrance in the Kop stand.
