Picturesque Port Gets Starring Role In BBC Drama

A picturesque Co Down seaside village is 'in focus' today as it is being used as the location for a BBC drama.

It's the second time in 18 months that Portaferry has provided the backdrop for a national TV programme, (with the eponymous ferry pictured here).

SDLP Ards Borough Councillor Joe Boyle has welcomed the decision of the production company to use Portaferry: "The local economy stands to gain from this filming experience and the Ruby Film Company is keen to assist the overall community where possible.

"This is the second major filming for the BBC that will have taken place in Portaferry, he revealed.

"I have had discussions and meetings with representatives of the company to assist with their concerns along with ensuring the support of the community," noting they came over to attend a public meeting last week to discuss today's 'shoot'.

"The new drama entitled 'Little Island' is set in the late forties in Yorkshire and is a love story, touching on the themes of empire, prejudice and war with a gentle touch and a warm, uplifting generosity of spirit," he also explained.

Last time the area was used to represent another location it was also a 'double' with Co Down then standing in for Devon in the BBC TV drama 'Desperados', a new comedy drama series by William Ivory.

It was filmed in Portaferry, Ballywalter, and Bangor - all doubling for Devon - where the story was set.
