Rabies Victim Dies
A young Ulster woman has died in hospital after contracting the rabies virus.
Lisa McMurray had been receiving treatment for the condition at Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital.
Ms McMurray, who worked in PR, died last night.
It is believed the woman may have contracted the virus on holiday. Rabies is usually transferred from animals through bites.
Ms McMurray's family paid tribute to her bravery, describing their devastation in a joint statement.
"We are extremely proud, not only of all she achieved in life, but also of the bravery with which she fought her illness," they said.
"Her courage was inspiring and typical of the passionate and determined way in which she led her life.
"Her loss will leave a huge hole in all our lives and her family and friends will miss her terribly."
The family expressed their thanks to the hospital staff who had looked after Ms McMurray.
"The sensitive way in which they cared, not only for Lisa, but for her family and friends, has been exceptional and we are very grateful," added the family.
Ms McMurray's relatives have asked for privacy to allow them to grieve.
The last case of the virus in Northern Ireland was over 70 years ago. It still remains extremely rare.

Work Underway For Free Hospital Parking In Northern Ireland
Work has begun at several hospital sites across Northern Ireland as part of the preparations for the introduction of free car parking in May 2026. Health and Social Care Trusts have been actively preparing for the implementation of a new traffic management system since the Hospital Parking Charges Act was passed in 2022.
